Action Armor
2018
Freshman Year
With our second project in set, A piece of "action armor" that would have a touch of abstraction was on the table, the conditions implied that the client should be able to use the product with no or minor obstruction to casual and normal movements. Given the opportunity to work with others, my friends Soren and Evan myself included were ready to tackle this assignment. Our first move was to come up with a concept of this "action armor" piece we would be making, knowing that the design and the mechanics behind it would be based of the base idea (concept). Upon brainstorming off of magazines, drawings, discussions and experiences we were able to conclude and agree upon the concept of spirals. With the concept at hand we chose to make the armor piece for the leg, because the idea of a spiral is a curve that emanates from a point, and progressively moves farther away. This concept was the perfect representative behind the ideas of a leg due to the similar characteristics and movements both subjects emitted. Once finished with the concept we moved to certain objects that were related to the idea of spirals for our design. We found useful perspectives such as goat horns, coil beans, spiral staircases, seashells, and even the golden ration was considered within objects. once the key factors for our design were recorded we started to draw, shade and scale our ideas on paper. In the making of our design we noticed that the sense of a spiral is doing the same movements and shapes among its movements away from the point. Taking that in consideration we decided to preface this idea with a similar sense of pattern repetition, biomimicry. Along with this conception we decided to use tessellation along with it to make the design not only look modern like, but also so that the curves, plains, beginnings and ends would blend in a distinguishable manner.
