This public parklet project would become of my few technical spaces that would be designed (hypothetically) for the public to utilize. The first step was to find a site, I decided upon on a place in which I was best familiar with in order to have the best site placement in regards to lighting, scenery, space occupation and other opportunities for the design to be made in, which ended up being Embarcadero Plaza downtown of San Francisco. Second step was to study existing parklets within the city in order to comprehend the values in components of importance within the design, the ones I studied were mainly based in the sunset district. After the research faze I moved on to conceptual work which were focused on the aspects of shading/cover, light usage and green space. After various design attempts I concluded that a design based of a canopy shape would best fit the requirements for much needed spacing. after creating a rough foundation of the parklet I started and finalized my conceptual model and realized that the space was in much need of natural lighting to illuminate the inside space so I designed and arranging the skylights that would serve as a natural light source for the parklet. I then made my first conceptual model only to find more flaws in the initial idea brainstorming.
Continuing on I redesigned the canopy itself to a series of layers supported by steel cylindrical beams that would allow air to filtrate in and out wood structure while providing space in between to place green space and maximize the space on the roof which would also serve as even more cover against those cold winds and small particles flying off and from the pier. This would also give a suited placement for the series of skylights made of hard acrylic plastic. On the outer perimeter of the canopy green space lays on top of the cemented walls of the parklet providing a better sense of greenly welcoming and a more relaxing stay.
