The pier 39+40 was a assignment based on a contest design that the city had made in order to narrow down the best design entries for the given space on the pier. I started off arranging the kiosk, art walk, green space, boat launch (includes Kayak storage) spaces. with a solid layout I moved on to the boat launch which was the only space I decided to focus my project on. After extensive sketching and research on dock designs and possible materials, I then made a rough conceptual design of the launch structure which was a supported cemented ramp that declines 20 feet into the surface of the water, with half of the boat launch being gravel to serve as a mean of bringing up and down the kayak, and a cemented ramp as another mean of docking the kayak that is scored at the bottom for a better grip to set up and climb on to the kayak at water surface l. The launch also contained staircases off the sides with rails for people to walk on which provides a divider between the staircase and the ramps to avoid kayaks getting in the way of people. Materials included (gravel, wood, cement, grass, steel). With this rough draft of a boat launch I built a digital model of the design, providing a better understanding of my intents and a insight into the much-needed changes the project would have to undergo. After a series of modifications and detailed alteration work, Imitation (name of this project) v2 made of the same material and same dimensions, the modifications included an added set of stairs down the middle of the boat launch with a middle rail to serve as a divider down and up the stairs. along the edge of the graveled material half there is a divider to avoid the kayak falling off the edge while it's being dragged. Comprised of the materials wood, steel, glass, and aluminum the boat storage space can hold up to 12 kayaks in length that can be stacked by 3 along the walls. The storage space has a series of vertically orientated windows within the walls to illuminate the inside space, as well as a skylight that sits on a divided frame. along the outer perimeter of the storage there is a bench that is connected off the ground with the exterior walls which is disconnected where it meets both double door entrances and the various windows between, which have cylindrical bars along the edges for people to utilize before setting off to the boat launch. Allowing Imitation to provide those essentials in methods of easy access and efficiency to start and finish a kayaking session with an ease.
